April is Heartworm Awareness Month! With the warmer temperatures that come with spring, both mosquito numbers and the risk of heartworm disease will increase. A single bite from an infected mosquito is all it takes to put your pet at risk. Treatment is expensive, dangerous, lengthy, and involves significant activity restriction. Thankfully, heartworm disease is preventable. At Best Friends Animal Hospital, we have two great products for canine heartworm prevention. Additional details and pricing are below.
Sentinel Spectrum – This is a monthly beef and bacon flavored chewable providing heartworm prevention as well as treatment and control of tapeworms, hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms. It also keeps flea eggs from hatching.
ProHeart6 – This is a single injection providing 6 months of heartworm prevention. It also treats existing hookworms.
There are currently rebates or rewards available with both products. Also, when using these products appropriately in conjunction with annual heartworm testing and proof of purchase from our clinic, you will receive support from both Best Friends Animal Hospital and/or the manufacturers should there be any perceived lack of efficacy.
Sentinel Spectrum – Receive a $7 rebate on 6 doses or $25 rebate on 12 doses. You can also earn drawing entries for a kayak that will be given away through Best Friends Animal Hospital in June. 2 – 8 pounds: $50
8.1 – 25 pounds: $52
25.1 – 50 pounds: $62
50.1 – 100 pounds: $75
Patients over 100 pounds will need the appropriate combination of Sentinel Spectrum sizes.
ProHeart6 Injection (6 Months)
1 – 24.9 pounds: $35
25 – 49.9 pounds: $40
50 – 74.9 pounds: $45
75 – 99.9 pounds: $50
100 – 124.9 pounds: $75
125 – 150 pounds: $85
Please keep in mind, to prescribe heartworm prevention and administer the injection we do require a current heartworm test (an annual test with records indicating monthly prevention). If you have any questions or need prevention, please call us or stop by the clinic!
